Chapter 15

“Hey, who’s that woman talking with Coach?” Kat tilted her chin toward Marge Tompkins and a woman with short, dark, graying hair.

Dee glanced over and tossed the baseball back to Kat. They were warming up before one of the Bandits games in the all-women’s baseball league. “Dunno. Maybe a reporter. She has one of those notebooks.”

Interesting, Kat thought. They finished warming up their arms and were in the process of stretching out their quads when Marge called out and waved.

“Benson! Come over here!”

As Kat rose, she heard Dee mutter, “Where have I seen this before?”

Kat trotted over.

“Kat, this is Sarah Swift with Baseball Weekly. They want to do a feature on you, maybe even follow us to a few out-of-town games.”

Sarah stuck out her hand. “Been hearing good things about you, Kat.”

“Thanks.” Kat gripped Sarah’s hand.

Marge said, “Difference between this one here and Perry is Benson isn’t shy. Sometimes I gotta knock her down a couple of pegs.” Marge looked like she was trying to maintain her dour expression, but her mouth slid into a smile. “Still a helluva ballplayer. I’ll let you two get at it. Remember we still have a game to play, Benson.” She clapped Kat on the shoulder on her way back onto the field.

“I know we can’t talk long,” Sarah said. “I wanted to get introduced and give you a heads-up as to why I’m here. I’ll still cover the Bandits for a short time, but my main focus is on you and your play. From what Lisa Collins and Amy Perry told me, you may have a shot at the lower minors.”

Normally, Kat would blurt out something like, “Hell yes, I have a shot!” But hearing that Lisa Collins, whose work she followed and admired, and the Amy Perry thought she had a shot? She didn’t know what to say.

“Guess Tompkins’s got you wrong. Seems like you’re a little shy.”

Kat felt the blush hit her cheeks. “It’s not that. It’s a surprise to hear Amy Perry thinks so highly of me.”

“Collins and Perry are discerning. Trust me. Is it okay with you that I do a feature and follow you some on the road? I don’t have to get your permission, but it helps if you’re cooperative.”

“I don’t have a problem with it… I mean, thank you, Ms. Swift.”

Sarah snorted. “Kid, do not call me Ms. Swift. I feel old enough as it is. Sarah’s fine.”

Kat offered her hand again. “I look forward to talking to you more, Sarah.”

“Me, too, Kat.”

Kat hustled into the dugout.

“Let me guess. She’s going to feature you in some articles,” Dee said, her voice dripping in sarcasm.

“Um…”

“Damn. You and Perry need to pay me some money. I seem to be a good luck charm with this reporter shit.”

“Once I hit it big, I’ll spot you some dough, Terrell.”

“Gee, thanks. Instead, why don’t you take me along for the ride?”

For a second, Kat thought Dee was serious. Then she caught the sly grin.

“You can always be my agent.”

“That’s not such a bad idea.
